Familial Relationship DNA Testing
Who Can Be Tested?
All DNA tests require samples from at least two separate people for results, but testing samples from more people in the biological family can improve accuracy. You can check the following relationships through family DNA testing:
- Paternity: This test can confirm a DNA match between an individual and their alleged father.
- Maternity: Confirm an individual's biological mother with a maternity test.
- Twins: Check if twin siblings are fraternal or identical.
- Siblings: Determine the nature of a full or half-sibling relationship.
- Grandparents: Test whether someone is the parent of a child by testing the grandparents' DNA.
- Aunt and uncles: This test cannot confirm the parents of a child, but it can determine a biological relationship.
Immigration DNA Testing
DNA testing can serve as proof of a biological relationship for the United States government for immigration visa purposes — especially if legal documents, photos or marriage certificates are unavailable. The government will only accept documentation in the form of the following DNA tests:
- Paternity testing
- Maternity testing
- Sibling testing
How Testing Works
Test Smartly Labs offers several varieties of testing kits for different relationships. Testing usually occurs through a buccal swab. Review some of our products below:
- Maternal DNA Test
- Siblingship DNA Test
- Twins DNA Test
- Avuncular DNA Test-2
- Grandparentage-3 DNA Test
Genes consist of variants called alleles that differ from person to person. When your sample comes into the lab, it will be compared to the other samples for matches in DNA. For this reason, more samples from a variety of biological family members can yield more accurate results.
Legal vs. Non-Legal DNA Tests
Non-legal DNA testing may be preferred if you need to collect the DNA samples privately or anonymously.
Legal DNA testing is done when the test results will be used for reasons in addition to peace of mind or general family knowledge. In issues of inheritance, taxes, adoption or custody, results need to follow chain-of-custody procedures in order for them to be used as evidence in legal documents.
This involves a certain procedure for the collection and a witness not involved with the family. Oftentimes special documentation for both the collection, processing and results is required. There are several benefits to getting a legal test that follows the chain of custody done.
At Test Smartly Labs, we’re an accredited lab by the AABB and follow proper procedures to ensure the results can be used for any situation you need.
Immigration DNA Testing
Immigration DNA testing can play a significant role when someone’s trying to get a visa application to go through and enter the U.S. – especially if you need to prove biological relationships.
At Test Smartly Labs, we work with AABB-accredited labs for immigration DNA testing to make sure the DNA test results can be used as part of the Department of State’s visa review process. Learn more about immigration DNA testing.
