Accurate. Confidential. Walk-In Friendly.
At Test Smartly Labs, we offer comprehensive opioid and opiate drug testing services designed for both individuals and businesses. With the rise of prescription drug abuse and the national opioid epidemic, expanded drug testing is now essential for workplace safety, court compliance, and health awareness.

Understanding the Opioid Crisis
Many people are prescribed opioids for valid reasons—like managing post-surgical or chronic pain—but misuse can occur quickly. When someone takes opioids outside of a doctor’s instructions, it becomes prescription drug abuse. The consequences are serious, and the problem widespread.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an estimated 10.3 million Americans over the age of 12 misused opioids in 2018. Of those, only 808,000 abused heroin; the remaining 9.9 million misused prescription pain medications. This shows how deeply the crisis is rooted in substances not covered by basic drug screens.
Opioids vs. Opiates: What’s the Difference?
Though commonly used interchangeably, opioids and opiates are chemically distinct:
| Term | Origin | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Opiates | Naturally derived from the poppy plant | Morphine, Codeine, Opium, Heroin |
| Opioids | Synthetic or semi-synthetic | Oxycodone, Fentanyl, Methadone, Hydrocodone |
Both categories are highly addictive, medically prescribed, and commonly abused. They block pain signals and produce a euphoric feeling, which makes them easy to misuse. Even first-time use can result in physical dependency.
Most Common Opiates and Opioids We Test For
We provide targeted testing for:
-
Codeine
-
Fentanyl
-
Hydrocodone / Dihydrocodeinone
-
Hydromorphone
-
Meperidine
-
Methadone
-
Morphine
-
Oxycodone
-
Oxymorphone
Custom testing panels are available upon request.
Heroin, Fentanyl, Morphine, and Oxycodone: Key Differences
These four drugs dominate the misuse landscape:
-
Morphine: Naturally derived, Schedule II drug used in medical settings.
-
Heroin: Processed from morphine, Schedule I drug with no accepted medical use.
-
Oxycodone: Synthetic alternative to morphine, Schedule II drug.
-
Fentanyl: One of the most powerful opioids, often used when patients become resistant to other medications. It is synthetic, highly potent, and frequently mixed into illicit drugs, contributing to overdose deaths.
Why Standard Drug Panels Fall Short
The standard 5-panel instant drug screen includes:
-
Marijuana (THC)
-
Cocaine
-
Amphetamines
-
PCP
-
Opiates (limited to morphine, heroin, codeine)
It does not detect synthetic opioids like fentanyl, oxycodone, methadone, or hydrocodone—meaning the majority of prescription drug misuse will go undetected.
We offer expanded panels such as the 10-panel drug test or custom opioid testing to capture a wider range of abused substances.
Signs of Possible Opioid Addiction in Employees
Many employers are unaware their staff may be struggling with opioid misuse. Watch for signs like:
-
Unexplained sweating in normal temperatures
-
Pinpoint pupils
-
Nausea or complaints of nausea
-
Constipation or other bowel issues
-
Slurred speech
-
Shallow or slowed breathing
-
Loss of interest in usual work or hobbies
These signs do not guarantee misuse but can be red flags. If multiple symptoms are present, intervention may be necessary.
We also provide training for employers to recognize drug misuse symptoms and take appropriate action.
Expanded Drug Testing Methods
To improve detection and prevention, we offer multiple testing formats:
-
Urine Testing: Detects most recent use (1–3 days).
-
Saliva Testing: Identifies very recent use (within 24–48 hours).
-
Hair Follicle Testing: Detects long-term use (up to 90 days).
-
Nail Drug Testing: Can reveal drug use for up to 6 months.
All tests are administered in a professional, private setting and are legally defensible.
How to Prepare for Your Drug Test
To ensure your test goes smoothly, please:
-
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID
-
Bring any test authorization paperwork (for employer, court, or other official use)
-
Complete TSL’s intake form and HIPAA disclosure
-
Pay for your test on-site unless it’s been pre-arranged

You do not need to bring your prescriptions. If required, a Medical Review Officer (MRO) may contact you to verify any medications after collection.
Why Opioid Testing Matters for Employers
Opioid misuse can directly affect workplace safety, productivity, and legal liability. Key risks include:
-
Increased absenteeism
-
Poor decision-making
-
Elevated risk of accidents or violence
-
Theft or property damage
-
Risk of legal or public relations consequences
Industries where employees operate heavy machinery or transport people—such as logistics, construction, or aviation—face especially high risks.
With accurate and affordable testing solutions now widely available, there’s no reason not to act. We help employers meet DOT, OSHA, and internal safety policies with ease.
A National Crisis with Local Impact
The opioid crisis affects people across all demographics—regardless of age, income level, or profession. Its reach includes:
-
Families in the suburbs
