Stay Compliant. Stay Road-Ready. Book Your DOT Physical Today with Test Smartly Labs

If you’re a commercial driver or a CDL holder operating in Kansas, passing a DOT physical exam is not just important—it’s required. At Test Smartly Labs, we help drivers meet the Department of Transportation’s health and safety standards, so they can stay on the road and in compliance with federal law.

Why DOT Physicals Matter

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates physical exams to ensure commercial vehicle operators can safely perform their job duties without putting themselves or others at risk. Whether you drive semi-trucks, buses, or commercial vans, a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC) is required.

The certificate must:

  • Be carried at all times by the driver

  • Be renewed every 24 months (or more frequently if medically necessary)

At Test Smartly Labs, we partner with FMCSA-certified medical examiners and streamline the testing process for individuals and companies alike.

What’s Included in a DOT Physical?

DOT physicals are comprehensive medical evaluations designed to assess both physical and mental fitness. The exam includes:

1. Vision Check

  • Drivers must have 20/40 vision in each eye (corrected or uncorrected)

  • Must have a minimum 70-degree field of vision in horizontal median per eye

2. Hearing Test

  • Must hear a forced whisper from 5 feet away, with or without a hearing aid

3. Blood Pressure & Pulse Rate

  • Blood pressure is measured for hypertension or irregular heart rhythms

4. Urinalysis

  • Tests for protein, blood, and sugar levels

  • Screens for underlying conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease

5. Physical Examination

A full-body assessment includes:

  • General appearance

  • Eyes, ears, throat

  • Heart, lungs, and chest

  • Abdomen and digestive system

  • Neurological function and reflexes

  • Musculoskeletal system (checking for limb impairments, hernias, etc.)

What to Bring to Your DOT Physical

Be sure to arrive prepared with the following:

  • Government-issued ID

  • Complete list of medications and prescribing doctor details

  • Corrective lenses or hearing aids, if applicable

  • Recent blood sugar logs and A1C results for diabetics

  • Cardiologist clearance letter (if you have a heart condition)

  • Any documentation of previous medical conditions

We also recommend completing your health history form in advance to save time at the appointment.

Who Can Perform a DOT Physical?

Only FMCSA-certified medical examiners are authorized to perform DOT physicals. At Test Smartly Labs, we work exclusively with certified professionals, ensuring your results are valid and recognized across all states.

You can find certified examiners listed in the FMCSA National Registry.

What’s The Turnaround Time For Lab Work?

Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.

Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?

Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.
