Depressants—also known as “downers”—are substances that slow down brain function and impact how the body responds to stimuli. While they may be used legitimately for medical treatment, they also carry a high potential for misuse and addiction. At Test Smartly Labs, we offer fast, confidential, and accurate testing options for a wide range of depressants.
Whether you’re an employer ensuring a drug-free workplace, a parent concerned about a loved one, or an individual seeking answers, our Kansas City-area labs are here to help.

What Are Depressants?
Despite their name, depressants don’t directly cause depression. Instead, they depress the central nervous system (CNS), reducing brain activity and communication between the brain and body. In small doses, this can create feelings of relaxation or sedation. In higher doses—or when misused—depressants can become dangerous and habit-forming.
These substances are often prescribed for:
-
Anxiety
-
Insomnia
-
Seizure disorders
However, recreational misuse can lead to tolerance, dependence, and addiction—posing serious health risks.
Types of Depressants We Test For
At Test Smartly Labs, we screen for common and dangerous depressant substances, including:
A. Barbiturates
Also called “downers,” these drugs induce calm and euphoria but are highly addictive. Long-term use affects REM sleep and overall brain function.
Common barbiturates include:
-
Amobarbital
-
Phenobarbital
-
Secobarbital
B. Benzodiazepines
These are among the most frequently prescribed CNS depressants for treating anxiety, panic disorders, and seizures. However, they are highly addictive, especially when mixed with alcohol or opioids.
Common benzos we test for:
-
Alprazolam (Xanax)
-
Diazepam (Valium)
-
Lorazepam (Ativan)
-
Clonazepam (Klonopin)
C. Alcohol
Though legal and widely accepted, alcohol is one of the most misused depressants. Chronic abuse leads to tolerance, liver damage, dependency, and potential death.
Why Is Depressant Abuse Dangerous?
Abusing CNS depressants can cause:
-
Slowed breathing or heart rate
-
Unconsciousness
-
Increased risk of overdose
-
Impaired decision-making and motor skills
-
Dangerous withdrawal symptoms, including seizures
Regular use increases tolerance, requiring higher doses for the same calming effects—increasing the risk of addiction and overdose.
If you or a loved one may be misusing depressants, lab testing is a safe and effective first step toward intervention.
Which Drug Test Should You Choose?
We offer multiple types of lab-based drug testing for depressants, depending on your situation:
| Testing Method | Best For | Detection Window |
|---|---|---|
| Urine Test | Employment, random, or legal testing | 1–5 days (barbiturates may last longer) |
| Hair Follicle Test | Long-term use detection | Up to 90 days |
| Nail Drug Testing | Extended historical use | Up to 6 months |
| Saliva Test | Recent use or impairment | 1–2 days |
| Sweat Patch | Continuous monitoring over 1–2 weeks | Continuous |
Our team can help you select the right test panel based on your specific needs, timeframe, and legal requirements.
