Identical or Fraternal? Find Out with Certainty at Test Smartly Labs
Whether you’re a curious parent or an adult twin who’s never been sure, a Twin Zygosity DNA Test can confirm whether twins are identical or fraternal. While doctors may offer an early guess based on the placenta, only a DNA test provides absolute certainty.
At Test Smartly Labs, we offer quick, non-invasive, and reliable twin testing—available at all our Kansas and Missouri locations.
Why Get a Twin Test?
Over time, families may lose or never receive clarity on whether their twins are identical or fraternal. A DNA test is the only definitive method to determine this. Even twins who look remarkably alike may turn out to be fraternal—and vice versa.
You may want to test because:
-
Medical records or placenta info were lost or unclear
-
The twins appear extremely similar but aren’t sure
-
You want scientific proof to accompany family stories or birth records
-
There may be future medical or transplant implications
Whatever your reason, we offer the clarity and peace of mind you deserve.
How Does the Test Work?
The process is simple, painless, and fast:
-
A cheek swab (buccal sample) is collected from both twins
-
The DNA is analyzed in our certified laboratory
-
We examine specific genetic markers to determine if the twins are monozygotic (identical) or dizygotic (fraternal)
What Will the Results Show?
-
Identical Twins: One fertilized egg splits in two. These twins have identical DNA and are always the same gender.
-
Fraternal Twins: Two separate eggs are fertilized at the same time. These siblings may or may not look alike, can be different genders, and are as genetically similar as any other full siblings—but they share a birthday.
Medical Importance of Twin Testing
While many families pursue twin testing for curiosity or sentimental reasons, knowing whether twins are identical or fraternal can also have important medical applications:
-
Identical twins are ideal organ, stem cell, and blood transfusion matches
-
Medical history tracking becomes more precise when DNA relationships are confirmed
-
Future genetic counseling may depend on accurate sibling classification
Whether for emotional closure or medical preparation, twin testing equips you with valuable insight.

What’s The Turnaround Time For Lab Work?
Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.
Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?
Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.
