Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1) testing is becoming a cornerstone of modern health diagnostics—especially for individuals looking to optimize strength, monitor aging, or address developmental concerns. At Test Smartly Labs, we offer IGF-1 blood testing services throughout the Kansas City area, including Overland Park, Independence, and Belton-Raymore.

Whether you’re working with a physician to uncover causes of fatigue or monitoring a child’s growth pattern, an IGF-1 test can offer crucial insights.

What Is IGF-1?

Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) is a hormone primarily produced by the liver, skeletal muscles, and other tissues. It plays a vital role in:

  • Stimulating cell growth and repair

  • Maintaining bone density and muscle mass

  • Regulating energy and recovery

  • Supporting healthy aging

IGF-1 is especially important for children and adolescents, as it works alongside growth hormone (GH) to fuel normal physical development. In adults, it helps maintain muscle strength and tissue integrity—making it particularly relevant in aging and hormone therapy.

Why You Might Need an IGF-1 Blood Test

There are many health scenarios where measuring IGF-1 levels is helpful. Physicians often order this test to:

  • Evaluate growth disorders in children or adolescents

  • Diagnose pituitary gland dysfunction or hormone deficiencies

  • Monitor GH therapy effectiveness in adults

  • Investigate symptoms like fatigue, muscle loss, or weakness

  • Screen for gigantism or acromegaly (excess GH conditions)

IGF-1 tests are often paired with growth hormone (GH) testing for a complete hormonal profile.

If you’re experiencing sluggishness, strength loss, or developmental delays—or if you’re under treatment for GH-related conditions—your physician may recommend IGF-1 testing to help guide diagnosis and treatment.

Who Should Consider an IGF-1 Test?

An IGF-1 test may be recommended if:

  • A child shows slow growth or delayed puberty

  • A patient may have underactive pituitary gland function

  • There’s suspicion of acromegaly or gigantism

  • An individual is undergoing GH therapy and needs progress monitored

  • You’re exploring hormone optimization or aging-related treatment options

At Test Smartly Labs, we work with patients of all ages, including hormone replacement therapy patients, athletes, and individuals undergoing functional medicine evaluations.

What’s The Turnaround Time For Lab Work?

Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.

Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?

Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.

Understanding STI vs STD

STI stands for “Sexually Transmitted Infection” and STD stands for “Sexually Transmitted Disease”. These two terms sound similar and the difference between them can be confusing. One of the reasons for this is that up to a certain point these two terms were synonymous and were used interchangeably. But now there is a technical difference between these terms which has been acknowledged by the medical community and can no longer be used synonymously.
