HIV testing is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your health and the health of others. At Test Smartly Labs, we offer confidential, accurate HIV screenings across our Kansas City metro locations — including Overland Park, Independence, and KC — to help you stay informed, empowered, and in control of your health.

HIV Is Still a Serious Concern
While tremendous medical advancements have made HIV more manageable than ever, it remains a prevalent and life-altering virus. According to the CDC, roughly 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, and approximately 13% (about 1 in 8) don’t know they’re infected.
That means over 150,000 Americans are unaware of their HIV status, placing themselves and others at increased risk of transmission.
Modern medicine has made it possible for many individuals to live long, healthy lives with HIV, especially when treatment begins early. Routine HIV testing is key to early detection and care.
Why You Should Get Tested for HIV
Getting tested for HIV:
-
Provides peace of mind
-
Enables early treatment and better long-term health outcomes
-
Protects your partners
-
Helps reduce the overall transmission rate in your community
At Test Smartly Labs, we provide safe, nonjudgmental, and discreet HIV testing to help you stay proactive about your sexual health.
Who Should Be Tested for HIV?
The CDC recommends routine HIV testing for a wide range of people, not just those in high-risk groups. Here are the current guidelines:
-
All adults and teens ages 13 to 64 should be tested at least once in their lifetime
-
All pregnant women, as early in pregnancy as possible (with repeat testing as needed)
-
Sexually active gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) should be tested every 3 to 6 months
-
Anyone who has had unprotected sex, multiple partners, or a partner with HIV
-
People who share needles or drug-injection equipment
-
Individuals diagnosed with any other STD, as co-infections are common
Even if you’ve tested negative before, if you’ve had new exposures or tested positive for another STD, it’s time to test again.
How Does HIV Testing Work?
At Test Smartly Labs, we use a quick and reliable blood test to screen for HIV. Most results are available within a few business days, and your privacy is always protected.
We offer both individual HIV tests and comprehensive STD panels, so you can choose the best option for your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Your Hours?
All Test Smartly Labs are open Monday through Friday, from 9am – 5pm
Do We Need To Have An Appointment?
No appointment is required to come into our labs, and all of our locations are on a walk-in basis. However, it is recommended you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to closing. If your situation requires special time considerations, please call us to determine if it would be better to arrange an appointment time.
Do I Need Doctors’ Orders For Testing?
No doctors’ orders needed, we are a Direct-Access Testing Center. You are encouraged to consult your medical professional with your lab test results.
What’s The Turnaround Time For Lab Work?
Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.
Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?
Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.

Understanding STI vs STD
STI stands for “Sexually Transmitted Infection” and STD stands for “Sexually Transmitted Disease”. These two terms sound similar and the difference between them can be confusing. One of the reasons for this is that up to a certain point these two terms were synonymous and were used interchangeably. But now there is a technical difference between these terms which has been acknowledged by the medical community and can no longer be used synonymously.
Privacy Matters for STI/STD Testing at Test Smartly Labs
While all health-related matters deserve the utmost privacy and confidentiality, some types of blood tests and lab work need even more. When it comes to STI or STD testing, you do not want to have any small chance of anyone you know finding out about your risks or diagnoses. Of course, if you go to your doctor’s office or even a public clinic, the HIPAA rules require everyone involved to keep your information private and secure. However, you may still have some doubts troubling your mind.
