Confidential Blood Testing for HBV at Test Smartly Labs

Hepatitis B (HBV) is a highly contagious virus that attacks the liver. Often transmitted through sexual contact or exposure to infected blood, this serious STD can lead to chronic infection, liver failure, and even liver cancer if not detected early.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 1.4 million Americans are living with chronic hepatitis B, and around 3,000 deaths occur each year due to hepatitis B-related complications.

At Test Smartly Labs, with locations throughout Kansas City, Overland Park, and Independence, we offer affordable, private hepatitis B blood testing to help you take charge of your health.

What Is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It spreads through bodily fluids, especially:

  • Unprotected sexual activity

  • Sharing needles or IV drug equipment

  • Direct blood-to-blood contact

  • Mother-to-child transmission during childbirth

It can develop as an acute infection (lasting less than 6 months) or a chronic condition (lasting longer) that leads to long-term liver damage.

Who Is at High Risk for Hepatitis B?

The following groups have an increased likelihood of HBV exposure:

  • People who have sex with multiple partners or with someone known to have HBV

  • Individuals who live with someone infected with HBV

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM)

  • IV drug users or those who share needles

  • Healthcare workers and others exposed to blood

  • Travelers to countries with high HBV rates (e.g. Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific Islands)

  • All pregnant women (CDC recommends testing during first prenatal visit)

  • Individuals with HIV (recommended to screen for HBsAg and antibodies)

If you fall into any of these groups or suspect exposure, early detection is critical.

Signs and Symptoms of Hepatitis B

While many individuals experience no symptoms, others may develop signs that mimic common illnesses. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Dark-colored urine

  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

  • Fatigue or general weakness

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Loss of appetite

  • Fever

  • Joint pain

The absence of symptoms doesn’t mean the virus isn’t active. Many people become chronic carriers without knowing it, putting others at risk.

How We Test for Hepatitis B at Test Smartly Labs

We use simple blood tests to screen for hepatitis B infection. These typically include:

  • HBsAg (Hepatitis B surface antigen) – to detect current infection

  • Anti-HBc (Hepatitis B core antibody) – indicates past or current infection

  • Anti-HBs (Hepatitis B surface antibody) – confirms immunity due to vaccination or recovery

We may also offer more comprehensive HBV panels depending on your exposure history or doctor’s referral.

Understanding STI vs STD

STI stands for “Sexually Transmitted Infection” and STD stands for “Sexually Transmitted Disease”. These two terms sound similar and the difference between them can be confusing. One of the reasons for this is that up to a certain point these two terms were synonymous and were used interchangeably. But now there is a technical difference between these terms which has been acknowledged by the medical community and can no longer be used synonymously.
