Determine Biological Relationships with Trusted, Legal-Grade DNA Testing
If you’re trying to confirm someone’s biological relationship and the alleged parent is unavailable, unwilling, or deceased, grandparent DNA testing may be the next best solution. At Test Smartly Labs, we offer court-admissible grandparentage tests performed in AABB-accredited laboratories.
Whether you’re establishing paternity, seeking legal documentation, or just looking for peace of mind, we can help—with accuracy, compassion, and confidentiality.
What Is a Grandparent DNA Test?
A grandparentage test compares the DNA of a child with one or both paternal (or maternal) grandparents to determine the likelihood of a biological relationship.
Because children inherit 50% of their DNA from each parent, and parents inherit 50% from their parents, a child shares approximately 25% of their genetic markers with each grandparent.
While not as definitive as a direct paternity or maternity test, grandparentage testing can still provide strong evidence of biological connection—especially when multiple family members are tested together.
When Should You Use This Test?
You may consider grandparent testing when:
-
The alleged father or mother is unavailable or deceased
-
You need legal proof of biological relationship (for custody, adoption, estate claims, etc.)
-
You want to support or refute family connection based on DNA
-
You’re preparing for an immigration case or guardianship request
-
Personal or medical history makes biological confirmation necessary
We offer both legal-grade and informational-only options. Legal tests follow a strict chain-of-custody process and are valid in court.
How Does It Work?
Here’s what to expect with a grandparentage test:
-
Sample Collection: We collect cheek swabs (buccal samples) from:
-
The child
-
The mother
-
One or both grandparents (typically paternal)
-
-
DNA Analysis: Our AABB-accredited lab compares multiple genetic markers to calculate a probability of grandparentage.
-
Results: Most tests are completed within 5–6 business days from the time all samples are received.
We can also coordinate remote DNA collection across the U.S. for out-of-state family members.
What If Only One Grandparent Is Available?
Testing with just one grandparent is possible, but we strongly recommend including the mother in this case to improve result accuracy. The more participants we can test, the more conclusive the results.
Legal vs. At-Home Testing
Only legal-grade testing can be used for court or official documentation.
At-home test kits are not admissible in court because:
-
Identity is not verified
-
Sample collection is not witnessed
-
Chain of custody is not documented
At Test Smartly Labs, we follow all procedures required for legal DNA testing, including photo ID verification, documentation, and witnessed collection.

No appointment is required to come into our labs, and all of our locations are on a walk-in basis. However, it is recommended you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to closing. If your situation requires special time considerations, please call us to determine if it would be better to arrange an appointment time.
Do I Need Doctors’ Orders For Testing?
No doctors’ orders needed, we are a Direct-Access Testing Center. You are encouraged to consult your medical professional with your lab test results.
What’s The Turnaround Time For Lab Work?
Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.
Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?
Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.
