Alcohol Testing
In many situations, alcohol use is acceptable and appropriate; however, there are several circumstances where it is not. One is the workplace. Drinking while on the job, or coming to work intoxicated, is a major safety concern in thousands of workplaces. At Test Smartly Labs, we offer a variety of alcohol testing options to meet your budget and needs.
How Long Can Alcohol Remain in Your System?
Alcohol testing determines whether a person has been drinking recently and how much is currently in their system. Alcohol can be detected in an individual's system through multiple tests — each with its own timeline. The timeline can also be determined based on an individual's age, genetics and body mass.
In general, alcohol testing must be done within the following time frames:
- Breath: Up to 24 hours
- Blood: Up to 12 hours
- Hair: Up to 90 days
- Saliva: One to five days
- Urine: 10-12 hours

Types of Alcohol Tests
To account for the various lengths of time that alcohol can remain in the system, several tests are available. These include:
- Breath alcohol testing: This test can identify how much alcohol is in your blood through an exhaled breath. Breath alcohol testing is also known as a breathalyzer test and is among the most common, especially for quick results. In most states, you are considered intoxicated if you test over 0.08% for DUI measurement or 0.02% per DOT guidelines.
- Blood alcohol testing: The amount of alcohol in your system can be measured using a blood sample from your arm. These results are the most accurate and are usually used in a court of law. Like with breath alcohol testing, anything over 0.08% is considered intoxicated.
- Urine alcohol testing (EtG & EtS testing): After an individual urinates in a sample cup, it can be sent to labs to be tested. Even when someone drinks a small amount, EtG and EtS can be found in their urine. EtG, also known as ethyl glucuronide, is a byproduct of ethanol that can be detected in these tests.
- ETG hair alcohol testing: Alcohol can remain in a person's system longer than you'd realize — especially in their hair. A hair alcohol test is among the most accurate markers for someone's alcohol consumption.
