About This Position

We are seeking a skilled Clinical / Toxicology Lab Specialist to join our team. This expanded role is designed for credentialed healthcare professionals — Medical Assistants, Phlebotomists, and RN's — who want to apply their clinical training in a professional, patient-focused environment.

As a Clinical / Toxicology Lab Specialist, you will perform phlebotomy and blood draws, conduct laboratory testing, and handle the full range of DOT and non-DOT drug and alcohol specimen collections. You will serve as a frontline representative of our company, ensuring accurate documentation, maintaining strict chain of custody protocols, and delivering exceptional customer service.

Key Responsibilities

Phlebotomy & Laboratory Testing

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws with precision and patient comfort
  • Conduct laboratory testing procedures according to established protocols
  • Process and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper calibration and cleanliness

Drug & Alcohol Specimen Collections

  • Conduct urine, hair, saliva, nail, mouth swab, and sweat patch specimen collections following DOT and non-DOT protocols
  • Perform Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) as a certified technician
  • Perform direct observation collections for same-gender donors as required by federal regulations (49 CFR Part 40)
  • Execute legal DNA collection procedures following exact chain-of-custody protocols

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain strict chain of custody documentation with complete accuracy
  • Complete all testing forms, lab paperwork, and software documentation accurately and promptly
  • Adhere strictly to HIPAA regulations and all laboratory policies and procedures
  • Sterilize and clean collection equipment; maintain organized examination rooms

Customer Service & Professionalism

  • Deliver professional, courteous service to all donors, clients, and company representatives
  • Represent Test Smartly Labs with integrity and professionalism at all times

We sponsor your DOT certification for Specimen Collections and Breath Alcohol Testing — obtained within 60 days of hire.

Required Qualifications

Certification / Licensure — Required

Candidates must hold one or more of the following current, valid credentials:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) — AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA, or equivalent accrediting body
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) — ASCP, AMT, NHA, NCCT, or equivalent
  • Registered Nurse (RN) — Current state licensure in Missouri or Kansas
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) — Current state licensure in Missouri or Kansas

Experience

  • Minimum 1–2 years of relevant clinical experience performing phlebotomy and/or patient care
  • Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture techniques

Professional Skills — Non-Negotiable

  • Exceptional attention to detail — accuracy in documentation and specimen handling is mandatory, not optional
  • Outstanding customer service abilities — you will interact with clients daily and represent our company
  • Professional demeanor and composure — must maintain professionalism in all situations, including with anxious or difficult patients
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills — clear communication with donors, staff, and clients is essential
  • Computer proficiency — must be comfortable with Excel, Word, Outlook, and various software systems

Mandatory Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation (required for mobile and onsite collections)
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening and consent to random drug testing as a condition of continued employment
  • Must pass criminal background check
  • Authorization to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior drug testing or specimen collection experience
  • Knowledge of 49 CFR Part 40 regulations
  • Experience with detailed documentation and compliance procedures
  • Willingness to perform mobile and onsite testing — a significant plus for candidates seeking additional hours and variety
  • Bilingual abilities (English required; Spanish or other languages a plus)
  • Experience in fast-paced, high-volume clinical environments

Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential to this role. Our clients depend on us to be available during business hours, and our team depends on each member to fulfill their responsibilities.

  • Consistent, on-time attendance is required — not requested
  • Excessive absences, tardiness, or unreliable attendance will result in termination
  • Candidates seeking a long-term, stable position are strongly preferred

Compensation and Benefits

Starting Pay: $19+ per hour (based on experience, credentials, and qualifications)

Monthly Performance Bonuses: Earned bonuses for Attendance, Punctuality, Customer Service, and Performance are paid monthly when criteria are met. Your dedication and excellence are recognized and rewarded.

Overtime Opportunities: Additional hours are available through mobile testing and business-on-site collections. We serve clients throughout the Greater Kansas City area, providing testing services at their locations. Team members willing to travel for mobile and onsite collections have the opportunity to increase their earnings while gaining diverse experience.
