Paternity DNA testing is a life-changing process that helps determine whether an individual is the biological father of a child. While more than 30% of fathers who have taken these tests discover they are not the biological parent, the popularity of “at-home” paternity test kits has skyrocketed due to their convenience and privacy. However, relying solely on these tests for legal, custody, or support matters can backfire in significant ways.

At Test Smartly Labs, we break down the differences between non-legal “good-to-know” paternity tests and court-admissible DNA testing, so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

What Is an “At-Home” or “Good-to-Know” Paternity Test?

At-home paternity kits are marketed as a quick and private way to confirm biological relationships. These kits generally include:

  • A cheek swab collection set

  • Instructions for use

  • A return mailer for lab testing

Once sent back, you’ll receive your results via email or mail within 5–10 business days. While this can be useful for personal knowledge, there are several issues with using at-home kits for legal purposes.

Problems with “Good-to-Know” At-Home Kits

Tampering & Contamination:
Since these samples are collected and mailed without professional supervision, they are prone to mishandling, tampering, and contamination—making the results unreliable and inadmissible in court.

Hidden Costs:
You may find yourself paying extra for shipping, processing, or redoing the test if the sample is invalid. This can drive up the price by 20% or more—erasing any initial cost savings.

Unaccredited Labs:
Many kits are tested in labs not accredited by the AABB (American Association of Blood Banks)—meaning there’s no oversight on test accuracy or data protection practices.

Privacy Concerns:
Lower-cost DNA kit providers may monetize your genetic data by selling it to third parties. With no clear disclosures, your personal information could be compromised.

Legal vs. Non-Legal Paternity DNA Testing

Non-Legal Tests

  • Intended for peace of mind only

  • Results not accepted in court

  • No verified chain-of-custody

  • Can be performed privately

Legal DNA Tests

  • Admissible in court

  • Used for custody, child support, tax, and immigration

  • Follows strict chain-of-custody protocols

  • Conducted by certified professionals with ID verification

At Test Smartly Labs, we follow procedures set by the AABB, ensuring your results can stand up in court or any legal proceeding.

What Is a Legally Admissible Paternity Test?

A legally admissible DNA test meets the requirements for use in court or government applications. These tests are often required for:

  • Establishing legal fatherhood

  • Child custody or support proceedings

  • Adoption or immigration cases

  • Access to social security or tax benefits

The Process:

  1. ID Verification using government-issued photo ID

  2. Sample Collection by a certified DNA collector

  3. Strict Chain of Custody documentation

  4. Testing by an AABB-certified lab

  5. Direct submission to legal authorities, no photocopies allowed

Why Choose Test Smartly Labs for Legal Paternity Tests

Accuracy You Can Trust

Home kits can be tampered with—swabs swapped or DNA from the wrong person submitted. At Test Smartly Labs, each test undergoes dual processing to ensure 99.99% accuracy.

AABB Accreditation

Our labs meet the highest standards for medical and forensic DNA testing. Every result is backed by nationally recognized accreditation.

Faster Turnaround

While at-home kits can take over a week, we provide court-admissible paternity test results in just 2–3 business days.

More Genetic Markers

Cheaper kits often test only 16 genetic markers. We go beyond that—testing more alleles for greater accuracy.

Professional Oversight

Our trained DNA collectors handle your test in a controlled and verified environment, with clear documentation at every step.

Downside Risks of At-Home Tests: Summary

Risk At-Home Kit Test Smartly Labs
Tampering High None (Chain-of-Custody)
Lab Accreditation Varies AABB-Certified
Legal Admissibility Not accepted Fully admissible
Data Privacy Not guaranteed Confidential & Secure
Test Accuracy 16 markers or less 20+ markers & verified
Result Time 5–10 days + shipping 2–3 days

When to Choose a Legal Paternity Test

If you’re facing child support issues, custody battles, legal adoption, or need proof of fatherhood for government benefits, don’t risk it with a home kit. A court-admissible paternity test offers defensible evidence you can rely on.

Be Prepared: What You’ll Need

  • Government-issued photo ID

  • Child’s birth certificate or alternate ID

  • Completion of TSL Intake Form & HIPAA Disclosure

Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?

Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.
