Whether you’re trying to get pregnant, experiencing abnormal bleeding, or simply tracking your hormone health, progesterone testing plays a critical role in understanding what’s happening inside your body. At Test Smartly Labs, we offer accurate and affordable progesterone blood testing at multiple Kansas City metro locations, with no insurance or doctor’s referral required.
What Is Progesterone and Why Does It Matter?
Progesterone is a key hormone involved in ovulation, menstruation, and pregnancy. It is produced mainly in the ovaries after ovulation occurs, by a structure called the corpus luteum. If conception occurs, the placenta eventually takes over progesterone production, supporting the pregnancy through all three trimesters.
When progesterone levels are too low, it can:
-
Prevent ovulation
-
Disrupt menstrual cycles
-
Cause infertility or miscarriage
-
Lead to irregular uterine bleeding
By getting tested at the right time in your cycle, you can get crucial insights into your ovulatory status and fertility readiness.
When Should You Get a Progesterone Test?
Progesterone testing is most effective about 7 days after ovulation, which is usually Day 21 of a 28-day cycle. This test helps determine if and when ovulation has occurred, and whether progesterone levels are high enough to support a potential pregnancy.
You may want to test if:
-
You’re trying to get pregnant
-
Your periods are irregular or absent
-
You’ve had repeated miscarriages
-
You’re undergoing fertility treatment
-
Your doctor suspects a luteal phase defect
What a Progesterone Blood Test Can Reveal
At Test Smartly Labs, our progesterone test is a simple blood draw that provides meaningful, actionable insights.
This test helps:
| Diagnostic Purpose | What It Tells You |
|---|---|
| Confirm Ovulation | Determines if you’re ovulating normally |
| Evaluate Corpus Luteum Function | Assesses if this post-ovulation structure is producing enough hormone |
| Track Fertility Timing | Helps align intercourse or IVF procedures with ovulation |
| Investigate Irregular Bleeding | Low progesterone may be causing hormonal imbalance |
| Support Menstrual Charting | Confirms basal body temperature charts and cycle timing |
Our Kansas City hormone testing specialists can guide you through your test results or provide documentation to share with your fertility specialist or OB/GYN.
Where Is Progesterone Made?
Your ovaries produce progesterone immediately after ovulation via the corpus luteum. If fertilization occurs, the placenta takes over hormone production by around week 10 of pregnancy.
If fertilization doesn’t occur, progesterone levels drop, leading to menstrual bleeding. Understanding this hormonal rhythm is key to both natural and assisted conception planning.

Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.
Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?
Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.

Understanding STI vs STD
STI stands for “Sexually Transmitted Infection” and STD stands for “Sexually Transmitted Disease”. These two terms sound similar and the difference between them can be confusing. One of the reasons for this is that up to a certain point these two terms were synonymous and were used interchangeably. But now there is a technical difference between these terms which has been acknowledged by the medical community and can no longer be used synonymously.
Privacy Matters for STI/STD Testing at Test Smartly Labs
While all health-related matters deserve the utmost privacy and confidentiality, some types of blood tests and lab work need even more. When it comes to STI or STD testing, you do not want to have any small chance of anyone you know finding out about your risks or diagnoses. Of course, if you go to your doctor’s office or even a public clinic, the HIPAA rules require everyone involved to keep your information private and secure. However, you may still have some doubts troubling your mind.
