Herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States, and yet most people who carry the virus aren’t even aware of it. At Test Smartly Labs in Kansas City, we offer fast, confidential HSV testing — so you can get the clarity you need and take the next step toward managing your health.
Why Get Tested for Herpes?
There’s no cure for herpes, but there are ways to manage outbreaks, reduce transmission, and stay healthy long-term. Early detection allows for timely treatment and helps you avoid passing the virus to others.
Testing is essential if you:
-
Notice symptoms like blisters or sores around the mouth or genitals
-
Have had sexual contact with someone diagnosed with herpes
-
Simply want peace of mind and proactive protection
At Test Smartly Labs, we provide accurate herpes testing via blood draw, performed in a discreet, professional environment.
Understanding the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
There are two main types of herpes viruses, both extremely common in the U.S.:
-
HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1)
Often causes oral herpes, which presents as cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth or lips. -
HSV-2 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2)
Most often causes genital herpes, spread through sexual contact.
How Common Is Herpes?
According to the CDC, 1 in 6 people aged 14 to 49 has genital herpes, and up to 90% of them are unaware they’re infected. Since herpes can be transmitted even when no symptoms are present, knowing your HSV status is key to making informed decisions about your sexual health.
Types of Herpes & Symptoms
Oral Herpes (HSV-1)
-
Often transmitted non-sexually in childhood through shared utensils, towels, or kissing
-
Symptoms include cold sores or fever blisters around the lips
-
HSV-1 can also cause genital infections through oral-genital contact
Genital Herpes (HSV-2 or HSV-1)
-
Transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who carries the virus
-
Symptoms include:
-
Itchy or painful blisters
-
Sores near the genitals, anus, or thighs
-
Flu-like symptoms during the first outbreak
-
If you experience any of these symptoms or suspect exposure, Test Smartly Labs can help you take the next steps with accurate HSV testing in Kansas City.
Who Should Get a Herpes Test?
Routine herpes testing isn’t typically recommended for asymptomatic individuals, but you should consider testing if:
-
You have visible symptoms (blisters, sores, irritation)
-
You’ve had sex with someone who has herpes
-
You’re entering a new relationship and want to test proactively
-
You want confirmation of your status before pregnancy
We use a herpes blood test (IgG antibody testing) to detect the presence of HSV-1 or HSV-2. These tests identify your immune response to the virus — even if you aren’t showing active symptoms.

What’s The Turnaround Time For Lab Work?
Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.
Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?
Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.

Understanding STI vs STD
STI stands for “Sexually Transmitted Infection” and STD stands for “Sexually Transmitted Disease”. These two terms sound similar and the difference between them can be confusing. One of the reasons for this is that up to a certain point these two terms were synonymous and were used interchangeably. But now there is a technical difference between these terms which has been acknowledged by the medical community and can no longer be used synonymously.
Privacy Matters for STI/STD Testing at Test Smartly Labs
While all health-related matters deserve the utmost privacy and confidentiality, some types of blood tests and lab work need even more. When it comes to STI or STD testing, you do not want to have any small chance of anyone you know finding out about your risks or diagnoses. Of course, if you go to your doctor’s office or even a public clinic, the HIPAA rules require everyone involved to keep your information private and secure. However, you may still have some doubts troubling your mind.
