Accurate, confidential lab testing at Test Smartly Labs

Hepatitis C is the most common chronic blood-borne infection in the United States, affecting an estimated 2.7 million people, according to the CDC. It’s often referred to as a “silent” virus because many people don’t know they’re infected — until serious health complications arise. Fortunately, Hepatitis C is both detectable and treatable.

At Test Smartly Labs in Kansas City and surrounding areas, we offer private, professional Hepatitis C blood testing for individuals who want answers fast.

What Is Hepatitis C (HCV)?

Hepatitis C is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which spreads through blood-to-blood contact — often through shared drug equipment, unsterilized medical instruments, or high-risk sexual activity. It primarily affects the liver and can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer if untreated.

How Is Hepatitis C Transmitted?

While IV drug use is the most common risk factor, you may also be at risk if you:

  • Shared drug paraphernalia (even non-injection methods like snorting)

  • Engaged in group or unprotected sex, especially if other STIs are present

  • Have HIV or a suppressed immune system

  • Received a blood transfusion or organ transplant before 1992

  • Were born between 1945 and 1965 (a high-risk demographic)

  • Are a healthcare worker exposed to blood

Symptoms of Hepatitis C

Most people with acute hepatitis C (recent exposure) show no immediate symptoms. However, over time — particularly if the virus becomes chronic — the following signs may emerge:

Early or Mild Symptoms:

  • Fatigue

  • Fever

  • Decreased appetite

  • Nausea

Advanced Symptoms:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of eyes or skin)

  • Abdominal pain

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Dark-colored urine

  • Pale or clay-colored stool

If left untreated, hepatitis C can cause permanent liver damage. Early detection through a simple blood test is the first step toward treatment and recovery.

Who Should Get Tested for Hepatitis C?

The CDC recommends hepatitis C screening for:

  • All adults aged 18+ at least once in their lifetime

  • Pregnant women during each pregnancy

  • Individuals born between 1945 and 1965, regardless of risk factors

  • People with HIV

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM), especially those with HIV (annual testing)

  • Anyone who has ever injected drugs, even once

At Test Smartly Labs, we provide confidential HCV antibody testing to screen for the virus. If needed, we can provide additional lab testing to confirm current or past infection status.

Do We Need To Have An Appointment?

No appointment is required to come into our labs, and all of our locations are on a walk-in basis. However, it is recommended you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to closing. No doctors’ orders needed, we are a Direct-Access Testing Center. You are encouraged to consult your medical professional with your lab test results.

What’s The Turnaround Time For Lab Work?

Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.

Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?

Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.

Understanding STI vs STD

STI stands for “Sexually Transmitted Infection” and STD stands for “Sexually Transmitted Disease”. These two terms sound similar and the difference between them can be confusing. One of the reasons for this is that up to a certain point these two terms were synonymous and were used interchangeably. But now there is a technical difference between these terms which has been acknowledged by the medical community and can no longer be used synonymously.
