Fast, Confidential Urine Testing at Test Smartly Labs

Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are more than 820,000 new infections every year, making it the second most reported STD nationwide.

If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious reproductive health complications. The good news? Gonorrhea is highly treatable with antibiotics, and early detection through a simple urine test can help protect your health and prevent transmission.

At Test Smartly Labs, we provide confidential, walk-in gonorrhea testing across our Greater Kansas City locations — including Overland Park, Kansas City, and Independence.

Why Get Tested for Gonorrhea?

Even if you don’t have symptoms, gonorrhea can still be transmitted and cause long-term health issues. Getting tested regularly helps prevent:

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in women

  • Infertility in both men and women

  • Epididymitis in men (inflammation of the testicles)

  • Increased risk of contracting HIV

Gonorrhea often goes undiagnosed because many people are asymptomatic.

Gonorrhea Symptoms

In Men:

  • Frequent or urgent urination

  • Burning sensation when urinating

  • White, yellow, or green discharge from the penis

  • Pain or swelling in one testicle

  • Sore throat (especially if oral sex occurred)

In Women:

  • Painful or frequent urination

  • Vaginal discharge that resembles a yeast infection

  • Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Fever, sore throat, or lower abdominal pain

Even without symptoms, you can still pass the infection to your partner. That’s why routine screening is vital.

CDC Screening Recommendations

You should be tested for gonorrhea annually if you fall into any of these groups:

  • Sexually active women under age 25

  • Women over 25 with new or multiple sexual partners

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM)

  • Anyone with a partner who has tested positive for an STD

  • Anyone experiencing symptoms or at increased risk due to behavior or partner history

If you’re unsure whether you should be tested, our team can help guide you through the process.

What Is Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It spreads through:

  • Vaginal, oral, or anal sex

  • Contact with infected genital fluids

  • From mother to baby during childbirth

It can infect the genitals, rectum, throat, and in rare cases, joints and other tissues.

Without treatment, gonorrhea can cause permanent damage — but with early detection, it is easily cured.

What Are Your Hours?

All Test Smartly Labs are open Monday through Friday, from 9am – 5pm

Do We Need To Have An Appointment?

No appointment is required to come into our labs, and all of our locations are on a walk-in basis. However, it is recommended you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to closing. If your situation requires special time considerations, please call us to determine if it would be better to arrange an appointment time.

Do I Need Doctors’ Orders For Testing?

No doctors’ orders needed, we are a Direct-Access Testing Center. You are encouraged to consult your medical professional with your lab test results.

What’s The Turnaround Time For Lab Work?

Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.

Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?

Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.

Understanding STI vs STD

STI stands for “Sexually Transmitted Infection” and STD stands for “Sexually Transmitted Disease”. These two terms sound similar and the difference between them can be confusing. One of the reasons for this is that up to a certain point these two terms were synonymous and were used interchangeably. But now there is a technical difference between these terms which has been acknowledged by the medical community and can no longer be used synonymously.

Privacy Matters for STI/STD Testing at Test Smartly Labs

While all health-related matters deserve the utmost privacy and confidentiality, some types of blood tests and lab work need even more. Of course, if you go to your doctor’s office or even a public clinic, the HIPAA rules require everyone involved to keep your information private and secure.
