Heart Health Testing
Getting ahead of your heart health can help you respond to major problems before they start. Your risk for heart disease will vary based on things you can and cannot control.
While your weight and other lifestyle choices, like smoking and eating a poor diet, are in your court to manage, other factors like your personal history of heart disease and your family history are risks you cannot control. In these cases, active monitoring through testing can help you respond proactively to risks.
What are Heart-Health Screenings?
Heart health screenings help doctors understand how well your heart is functioning. Many factors can affect how well your heart pumps, and screenings allow health professionals to identify your risks and offer recommendations for preventive care. Talk to your doctor to find out what age you should start these heart health lab tests and how often you should take them.
The American Heart Association recommends the following screenings to help you understand your risk of heart disease.
Blood Pressure
High blood pressure may not come with any symptoms, but it could increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Blood pressure screenings are commonly done every time you visit your doctor, but you may need to test more frequently if you're exhibiting higher than normal values. Talk with your doctor about how often your blood pressure should be taken.
Fasting Lipoprotein Profile
This blood test measures your total cholesterol. Like high blood pressure, high cholesterol often doesn't come with physical symptoms, but high levels can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke. If you have a history of high cholesterol in your family, this test should be a part of your heart health check.
To get an accurate report, you must fast for eight to 12 hours before the test. Water is the only liquid you can drink beforehand. You can request this test yourself, or have your doctor call Test Smartly Labs to request the test for you.
Body Weight
Tracking your heart’s health involves more than stepping on the scale. It’s important to know your body mass index (BMI). According to the American Heart Association, having obesity increases the risk of health problems like heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke and others. Talk with your doctor’s office about monitoring your BMI.
While your body weight can have genetic influences ranging from 25% to 80%, your doctor can also help you make lifestyle changes to effectively manage your weight and reduce your risk of heart disease.
Blood Glucose
If your blood glucose levels are high, you’re at greater risk of insulin resistance, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. If this goes untreated, it can lead to heart problems. Our blood glucose test can measure the “glycated hemoglobin A1c level” and screen your diabetes risk. You can request this test yourself, or your doctor can recommend it.
