Employers Should Randomly Drug Test?
“Pre-employment screening is not good enough to reduce drugs in the workplace as anyone can stop long enough to find a job… ”
“If your business doesn’t drug test, you will likely attract illicit drug abusers looking for employment…”
According to a recent study, about 1/8th of drug users work as part-time or full-time employees in various organizations throughout America. So, chances are high that your employees may have a drug usage history or may even be a regular user of some type of illicit drugs. That is the reason why random drug screening of your employees should be performed. Most companies usually test for drugs at the very start of the employment process, which they believe is good enough, but few are foolish enough to be intoxicated or using during the time period when they are seeking employment. Most employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screen or test.
Usually drug users quit using drugs weeks before the beginning for their pre-employment screening but get back on an abusive path when their job gets more regular. This is only part of the reason why random drug checks should be a thing. The other part is that in the pre-employment period, illicit users have the knowledge that they will be tested, they can tamper with the testing procedures like replacing urine samples, etc. but this requires the foreknowledge of the test. Hence the solution, random screening, when the tests are at random dates, no one can prepare for it and drug users can be exposed.
Drug checks are not a new thing. They have been used by large scale employers since the 80s and was widely adopted by more and more companies in the early 90s. Another thought that comes to mind is that if it is your right to know what a person is doing in confidentiality, in their own time. Well, legally, there is no law defending their right to illegal activity at their own time. In any case, you will be testing intoxication in their work hours which is enough reason to terminate an intoxicated employee.
Employees with drug abuse problems are of course more likely to be in workplace accidents, pertaining to damaged products or goods manufactured, which is an obvious loss for the employer. Recently, an incident occurred due to a school bus crash caused because the driver was under the influence. The crime rate also tends to increase while under the influence on duty. Several videos have gone viral of well-known food chain employees acting out during work time because they seem to be intoxicated.
Even more reasons in favor of random drug tests are loss in efficiency, unpredictable behavior, a decline in quality of the product or service, safety risks, and there is an obvious chance of bad press for the company if word gets out, and it usually does in this modern era of smartphones and social media. It is very easy to point and shoot any kind of behavior.
Bottom line is, if you are an employer, you should opt for random drug tests for your employees. This is not only to your advantage but long term, it is in their best interest as well. When found guilty, they will get better treatment for themselves to get back on track.

How Does Test Smartly Efficiently Test For Cocaine?
If you’re testing someone for cocaine use, you need to take into account how much they’re using (dosage) and how often (frequency). This may help you decide which type of test you need.
Here’s a helpful guide:
- Did someone use cocaine one time? (single use)
- A saliva test will be most effective
- Avoid urine or hair tests
- Has someone been using a lot of cocaine? (high dosage)
- A nail test will detect the longest length of time; a hair test will look at dosage over the past 90 days
- Has someone been using cocaine very often (frequent use)?
- A urine or saliva test are the best tests for this
