Barbiturates Testing
Barbiturates were first introduced for medical use as mild sedatives, anesthetics, anticonvulsants, and pain killers by depressing the central nervous system and inducing sleep. In the 1970s, because of reports of overdose and dependence spinking, barbiturates were classified as Schedule II drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. Today, safer benzodiazepines have replaced barbiturates to treat anxiety and insomnia. However, for the treatment of epilepsy, migraines, and cluster headaches, barbiturates are still used.
Barbiturates Detections
Barbiturates are often misused for their intoxicating effect, similar to alcohol. Feelings of relaxed contentment and euphoria are the most common. Test Smartly Labs offers several drug tests that can determine if barbiturates have been used and/or abused. Depending on the type of test, barbiturates can be detected for as long as:
- Blood test - 72 hours
- Saliva test - 3 days
- Urine test - 6 weeks
- Hair follicle test - 3 months
There are a number of additional factors that contribute to how long barbiturates can be detected in your system, including your body mass index (BMI) hydration levels, age, food intake, gender, metabolism, the amount taken and the frequency of use.
The Effect Of Barbiturates
Barbiturates work by slowing activity in the brain causing relaxation and sleepiness. Since barbiturates are depressants, even low doses can cause the feeling of being drunk or intoxicated. The risk of overdose is high, especially when combined with alcohol or opiates; mixing with these substances can result in overdose, coma, or death.
- Common types of barbiturates:
- Amytal (amobarbital)
- Fiorinal (butalbital)
- Nembutal (pentobarbital)
- Donnatal (pehnobarbital)
- Seconal (secobarbital)

Understanding Drug Testing Types, Methods And Specimen Collection
Examining the wide assortment of drug testing options available and exploring the potential pros and cons of each method
There are several reasons or circumstances that can lead to the necessity of a drug test.
Prescription Drug Abuse: Signs, Symptoms and Statistics
Prescription drug abuse implies taking prescription medication was not given to you by the doctor, or taking your prescription medication in a manner that differs from the instructions. While taking prescription medication is not perceived as equivalent to taking illegal street drugs, the consequences can be equally harsh
Understanding the Opioid Epidemic
It is nearly impossible to go through the day without hearing about the opioid epidemic. From the White House to media outlets, not a day goes by where the American people are not subjected to the latest statistics, the newest court cases, or the most recent treatment option. However, despite the constant coverage and warnings about the crisis, it appears that the full gravity and potential impact of the epidemic is widely misunderstood.
A 10-panel drug test:
A drug test for barbiturates is not included in the standard 5-panel test. Another common drug test that can be performed is the 10-panel drug test with expanded opiates which includes:
AMP-Amphetamines (MAMP-Methamphetamine, MDMA-Ecstasy), COC-Cocaine, PCP-Phencyclidine, THC-Marijuana, BZO-Benzodiazepines, BAR-Barbiturates, MTD-Methadone, PPX-Propoxyphene, Meth-Methaqualone, OPI-Opiates (including heroin, codeine, and morphine), and expanded Opiates which adds Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, Oxycodone, and Oxymorphone.
This test with expanded opiates does provide a drug test for barbiturates. Most other drug test panels with 10 or more drugs will include barbiturates in panels such as 12-panel, 14-panel or health care professional panel.
Be prepared for your drug test:
- Bring your Government Issued Picture ID
- Bring Drug Test Paperwork or Authorization
- Complete TSL Intake Form & HIPAA Disclosure
- Pay for your Test on the same day it happens
- Make sure you are hydrated if you are performing a Urine Test
- Expect to have your nail polish removed if getting a Nail Drug Test
- We do not need your prescription information but a Medical Review Officer (MRO) may contact you after collection to verify your medications.
- For urine testing, plan on arriving 3 hours before we close (1 hr minimum) to provide a cushion of time for a shy bladder situation.
- For hair testing, be sure to dry your hair completely before arriving.
- For nail testing, be sure to clean your nails with soap and water before arriving. Also, artificial nails and polish must be removed.

What’s The Turnaround Time For Lab Work?
Average turnaround time is 2-5 business days depending on the complexity of the lab work. Most tests are available in 2-3 days.
Do You Need A List Of My Medications For A Drug Test?
Per protocol, the lab techs are not allowed to receive or ask for your medications. A medical review officer or MRO, a licensed physician who specializes in toxicology, will call you and ask for your medications and your physician’s phone number if it’s detected in your sample during testing. The MRO will then call your physician to verify your medications.
