A maternity test works a lot like a paternity test. You can perform a maternity test to determine if a woman is a child’s biological mother. When is this needed?
Most often this is used in cases of immigration. It is also not uncommon to need this test in adoption cases – sometimes an adopted child who’s adoption was closed will look to a maternity test to verify if a woman is his/her birth mother.
In rare occasions, a maternity test can be used to verify you went home with the right child from the hospital and other maternity mixups.
What’s needed for a maternity test?
A maternity test only needs a sample of DNA (most often a cheek swab) from the child, as well as from the mother. If this is not possible to obtain, testing grandparents may be another option.
To request this test, call our office and schedule an appointment.
We’ll work with you to collect the samples – you do not have to schedule collections on the same time or day. Our team will help make sure everything is collected in the right way.
It is important to know:
- If you will need to use the results in court or for any legal purpose, we’ll need you to come to our office to collect. We only use AABB-accredited labs, meaning they meet the highest standards for lab testing and you can rest assured the result will be 99.9% accurate.
