Kidney Disease Testing
1 in 3 Americans is at risk of developing kidney disease according to the National Kidney Foundation. Around 30 million suffer from what’s called chronic kidney disease, a condition that causes your kidneys to gradually lose function. Kidney screening can help you identify if you’re one of the millions at risk of getting the disease. If you discover you are at risk early, you’ll have a better chance of treating it.
Screenings for Kidney Disease
We recommend working with a doctor to determine if you have kidney disease. The National Kidney Foundation explains the doctor may recommend the following tests:
GFR (glomerular filtration rate) – a blood test
ACR (Albumin to Creatinine Ratio) – a urine test
Kidney (Renal) Panel-Basic Panel
If you want us to analyze your kidney risk and function, here’s a panel of tests many clients find helpful:
- Albumin, Serum
- BUN: Blood Urea Nitrogen, Serum
- Calcium, Serum
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
- Chloride
- Creatinine, Serum
- Glucose (Fasting)
- Phosphorus, Serum
- Potassium, Serum
- Sodium, (Na) Serum
Test Smartly Labs is much more affordable than hospital labs and we can send your results wherever they need to go. If you’d like to give your urine or blood samples in a comfortable, discreet location, let us help you.

Taming Out-of-Control Lab Test Costs
Unmanageable and skyrocketing lab tests are a thing of the past with Test Smartly Labs
We live in an era of rapidly advancing science and an endless desire for understanding.
As technology and scientific studies advance our world into the future, human beings are able to unlock and explore their own inner workings in ways that were simply unimaginable just a few decades back. Advances in DNA testing, genetic screening, disease preventions, allergy profiles, and highly receptive sexual health screenings have literally changed the way the human race is able to predict, treat, or understand intrinsic truths about their physical well-being that had long been hidden to the average consumer. With minimal effort, we are able to get a full read out of our ancestral past, determine our risk for cancer, or identify a long dormant condition that would have long term health and happiness. While new and exciting developments continue to be discovered, older testing options have become more efficient and faster than ever before: Drug screening or other substance testing can go from collection to results in minutes to hours, unlike the antiquated tests of decades past that could take weeks to complete. Beyond being faster, the materials for all these miracle tests have become less expensive and easier to transport – all of which would imply that the cost of these tests should be going down, right?
Out-of-Control Lab Testing Costs are Hurting Us All
Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to always be the case.
Despite faster results and reduced overhead, the cost of lab testing has continued to rise throughout the last two decades. The biggest culprit in this apparent industrial price-gouging is often directly associated with escalating insurance costs and reductions in healthcare coverage. For individuals who have low-deductible insurance plans, this cash grab might not be apparent – but for those with high deductible plans or no insurance at all, the idea of lab testing seems like an unattainable luxury – even if the testing could potentially save their lives. Even those with great health insurance are impacted by the inflated cost of lab testing, as the high cost of the screenings becomes a justification for exorbitant insurance premiums. In other words, the impact of high cost of lab testing is universal.
Regaining Control of Excessive Lab Testing Costs
There is hope, however.
As a consumer, there are steps you can take to ensure you are paying significantly less for lab tests and screenings – even if you have a high deductible plan or no health insurance at all. By taking the time to research your options, you can receive high quality lab testing for pennies on the dollar – saving you money and possibly your life.
That’s where Test Smartly Labs comes in.
Committed to delivering exceptional service and modest pricing, Test Smartly Labs is the quickest, easiest, and most reliable way to drastically cut the cost of lab testing. In other words, you get the same labs that will deliver the same reliable results – only at a significantly lower and more reasonable price point.
• Full Assortment of Testing Options
A common misconception about stand-alone lab testing centers is that you, as the consumer, are limited in the number of tests, specimens, or screenings that you have access to. Not true. Test Smartly Labs offers a full array of lab testing options, from DNA and Paternity testing to Drug & Alcohol testing, we offer a full menu of testing options and services. Test Smartly Labs also offers a wide variety of bundled discount options.
Easier Access
Getting a medical authorization for many healthcare lab tests can be frustrating at best, and impossible at worse. With several locations in Greater Kansas City, and dozens of lab partners, Test Smartly Labs prides itself on easy access no matter where you are. For individuals who live paycheck to paycheck, quick access to affordable medical healthcare lab testing can mean all the difference in the world. We believe in making this important facet of a healthy lifestyle accessible for everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status.
• Control Your Health
No one knows your body better than you. At Test Smartly Labs, we believe you are the expert and the number one authority when it comes to your health. We believe that by giving you the power of your own healthcare journey, you will be empowered to make better and more informed decisions moving forward. We encourage everyone to consult with a healthcare professional to discuss your lab results once obtained.
• Same Price – No Matter the Reason
Some legal organizations overcharge clients for drug screenings, imposing a premium on court mandated testing. Some hospitals charge extra for testing because the cost of everything is exaggerated in the hospital setting. At Test Smartly Labs, what you see is what you get – and the price will never change, no matter the reason. We will give you the pricing upfront before you test so you know exactly what the costs will be.
• Improves Health Outcomes (which saves you money)
The crass truth is this: Spending the money to identify health problems will improve your health, which will in turn save you money. When your healthcare is monitored and issues are prevented or quickly treated, statistically speaking, you are less likely to overspend on other healthcare interventions moving forward. By identifying any potential problems, you can quickly and affordably improve your health and prevent future problems. As the saying goes, “A stitch in time saves nine.”
• Boosts Profits & Productivity for Businesses
Being a business owner can be tough, and there is nothing that causes more businesses to drastically lose profits or go under like employee turnover. With drug use being directly linked to increased absenteeism, dangerous workplace conditions, and potential lawsuits, screening potential employees for potential substance abuse issues can literally save a business millions of dollars.
Lab-testing can be expensive, but at Smartly Test Labs, it doesn’t have to be. With fully vetted and certified scientific and medical lab partners delivering high quality lab results, we provide more than just answers: Smartly Test Labs delivers peace of mind, and in an affordable and incredible way.

Understanding Lab-Based Drug Testing vs. Instant Drug Screening
Exploring the potential benefits, flaws, and results of drug screening options
The process and specifics related to drug screening can be overwhelming and intimidating to even the most seasoned employer, lawyer, law enforcement officer, or civilian.
Drug screening is utilized for a variety of reasons, ranging from supporting a loved one in recovery, to court appointed mandate, to safety precautions for a job. Regardless the reason, understanding the specifics and ramifications of different testing methods, as well as their pros and cons, can be vital in choosing the right test for the scenario. One of the single most important decisions when administering any drug screening is whether to utilize a lab-based screening or an instant drug screening test.
Understanding the Differences
As the names would suggest, lab-based screening takes place in an off-site diagnostic lab, while instant drug screening can deliver instant results wherever the test is administered. However, the differences between the two screening methods go far beyond the location of the testing.
Lab-based testing has a far wider range of acceptable screening specimens, offering the maximum variety of testing options. Lab-based testing can utilize urine, hair, nails, saliva or blood to screen for a wide variety of drugs or drug metabolites in any individual, whereas an instant drug screening is far more limited in the specimen collection process– typically only urine and saliva. Additionally, each type of test has different and unique purposes and applications.
The question then becomes, “Which test is right for me?” The answer depends almost entirely on what you are testing for, the purpose of your testing, how fast you need the results, and what you will do with the information upon completion of the screening. The most reliable way to decide whether lab-based test and make an educated decision from there.
Lab-Based Drug Testing
Traditionally administered in a controlled environment and under some form of supervision, lab-based testing is considered the more traditional and reliable method of drug testing and screening. Often used for court orders, legal matters, high risk safety circumstances, there are several benefits and set-backs to consider when choosing lab-based drug screening.
Lab-Based Testing Pros
• Accuracy
Regardless the tested specimen, lab-based screening delivers significantly more reliable results than the instant drug screening alternative. The higher level of sophisticated machinery utilized in the lab delivers dependable results that will hold up in any court of law. Also, next level lab confirmations and MRO reviews to ensure the accuracy of the results.
• Federally, State, and Court Approved
Lab-based testing is the only form of drug screening recognized by the Federal government and a large number of state government agencies. Additionally, lab-based drug screening is the only method recognized in a court of law.
• Wider Options for Testing
With the wide array of specimen options available to lab-based testing, it stands to reason that there are far more options to specify what substances, thresholds, or timeframes you are screening for.
• Greater Sensitivity
With precise and expert administration of screening, lab-based testing can potentially identify hundreds of substances, illicit or not. Beyond being able to identify a large number of substances, lab-based drug testing can pick up on chemicals that might otherwise be overlooked by an instant drug screening.
• Automatic Retesting of Non-Negatives
It is critical to understand the difference between testing positive for a drug and testing non-negative. The majority of testing will identify non-negatives, something that simply states that the specimen is inconclusive of the substance – but not necessarily testing positive for it. In lab-based testing, non-negatives are automatically retested for lab confirmation and then a Medical Review Officer (MRO) will contact the donor for possible prescriptions before determining the drug test positive or negative.
Lab-Based Cons
• Turnaround Time and Waiting Period
Unlike an instant drug screening, lab-based testing can take a couple of days to receive a result. Once a specimen is obtained, it needs to be sent to the lab, tested, analyzed, quantified, and verified before results can be received.
• Typically, More Intrusive
There is no way around it: Lab-based testing can be far more intrusive to the individual being tested. Whether hair is being cut from their head, blood is being drawn, or patches are being adhered to the body, the process is far more intrusive.
• Often Location Based
The majority of lab-based drug screenings require off-site travel to have the test administered. However, Test Smartly Labs has the ability to do on-site and mobile lab-based drug and alcohol testing.
• Possibly More Expensive
It stands to reason that with additional testing, additional options, and additional support staff comes additional cost. The overhead cost of administering lab-based drug testing translates directly into a higher purchase cost. However, if Instant Screening is done properly it should include lab confirmations and MRO review which can make Instant Screening more expensive than lab-based testing. Test Smartly Labs bundles lab confirmations and MRO services to save our clients money and because it is the right way to test.
Instant Drug Screening
The more mobile and speedy option, instant drug screening is often administered in the home, in the office, or even in a school setting. Instant drug screening can be used for home purposes, employment, mass hiring situations or job sites. Instant Screening are not conclusive and should not be considered as a “Drug Test.” An Instant Screens only shows a negative result or non-negative result. It is not conclusive a positive drug test and should never be used as a final verdict on drug testing.
Instant Drug Screening Pros
• Instant Results
Unlike lab-based testing, instant drug screening results are available (almost) instantly. Within a few minutes, quick results are available for consideration and examination.
• Can Be Administered Anywhere
The mobile and less technical nature of instant drug screenings lends to far more flexible testing location options. Whether administered in the office or off-site, instant drug screenings don’t require a lab setting at all but a restroom will be needed.
• Several FDA Approved Options Exist
While the results of an instant drug screening might not be recognized in legal matters or for the Federal courts, there are still verified FDA approved testing products that are able to deliver quality results.
• Inexpensive
Without lab to send away to and less overhead, the cost of instant drug screening is typically far less expensive than its lab-based counterpart. However, non-negative results should be sent to a diagnostic lab for lab confirmation and an MRO review which will likely end up costing more in the long run.
• Covers Dozens of the Substances
While not as varied as lab-based, instant drug screenings typically offer the most commonly sought-after substances.
Instant Drug Screen Cons
• Will Not Hold Up in Court
In legal matters, an instant drug test will not be considered reliable or substantial enough for consideration in a court of law.
• Less Accurate
Instant drug screenings are more prone to inaccuracies or misinterpretations, due in part to the less sensitive nature of the test, the wide variables, the inability to retest non-negatives, or human error.
• Varying Thresholds
Depending on what test you purchase, thresholds and sensitivities may vary greatly. Additionally, some testing companies can change their thresholds with little notice.
• Limited Specimen Types
Instant drug screenings are only able to examine two types of specimen – urine and saliva. The limited options for specimen also limit the screening potential for the tests.
Deciding for Yourself
Ultimately, the decision on what type testing option is right for your specific circumstance depends entirely on your individual needs. By examining the benefits and drawbacks of both types of testing, you can make an educated decision on whether lab-based or instant drug screening will best suit your needs.

Lab Testing as an Integral Part of Your Overall Fitness & Health Program
What does it actually mean to be fit and healthy?
Finding one particular definition of fitness or health is challenging. According to several dictionaries, fitness means - the state or quality of being fit.
Well, fitness can mean different things for different people. But, one thing is certain for many, overall fitness is all about being healthier and feeling better.
Let’s understand why it is so…
There is no wonder that if there is an industry that continues to grow without any kind of hindrances, it’s the fitness and wellness industry. This is only because of the increasing number of people getting conscious about their health worldwide. Weight gain & obesity are considered to be one of the most common health conditions all over the world.
Unfortunately, not many people understand that suitable fitness plans should be started after undertaking lab tests for health. Many people might not prefer blood tests before starting a new fitness program. But, believe it or not…lab testing is an integral part of your overall fitness & health program.
The Significance of Lab Tests (Blood Tests) for Fitness
Well, it is well-known that blood tests are utilized to diagnose disease. But, blood work can also be utilized to monitor health. Comprehending your blood biomarkers will help you in making more informed decisions about your fitness, diet, supplement choices and lifestyle.
Blood work data can be utilized similarly to how you would utilize the info in your fitness or diet plans or provide information on your organs or bodily functions as to whether or not they are functioning properly or failing. The result is always in the numbers. The true potential of utilizing blood tests relies on viewing and monitoringthe metabolic trends of your long-term health.
Most of us wait until it is so late to begin monitoring our health. Waiting until you are very sick is similar to changing the oil in your vehicle when the check engine light turns on. This lack of awareness in keeping the function of your “vehicle” creates costly future problems like engine failure. Considering a regular health monitoring approach to remain healthy or fit will always cost less and consume less time than it would to handlea chronic illness.
Most chronic health conditions are preventable. And lab tests and blood work provide an insight into the future of your overall health.
Consider Lab Tests for Health before Commencing a New Fitness Program
Knowing your blood work can help you make the right decisions about your health.
The following are major reasons why it’s important to know your blood work by lab testing before/during/after the fitness regime.
The blood test will help you with -
- If you have any kind of nutrient deficiencies boosting your chronic disease risk. Do you have vitamin D deficiency that is boosting your chance of osteoporosis and cancer?
- The dietary changes to make in order to prevent disease and boost your mental clarity. Do you need to consume more healthy sources of protein or fat for optional brain health?
- It will help you conclude what type of fitness plan is suitable for you. Do you truly need to undertake high-intensity exercise or low-intensity exercise?
- It will help you determine what supplements will be necessary to help you reach your fitness goals.
On top of all, knowing your blood work eradicates the uncertainty surrounding the present state of your health and will provide you the great peace of mind that you are amazingly taking control of your future wellbeing.
The Most Common Blood or Lab Tests for Wellness
When your doctor recommends regular blood tests, it may appear a bit like secretcodes: - a CMP, a CBC and a lipid panel. Here are the fundamentals of each test-
- CBC (Complete Blood Count)
The CBC determines the types of cells in the blood, for instance, white blood cells, the red blood cells and platelets, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and the shape and size of blood cells. Well, results can signify numerous conditions, for instance, different types of infection, dehydration, anemia, blood cancers, and kidney disease.
- CMP (Comprehensive metabolic panel)
A CMP determines numerous chemicals in your blood, for instance, creatinine and blood urea nitrogen to test kidney function, blood sugar for diabetes, AST (aspartate aminotransferase) and ATL (alanine aminotransferase) for liver and calcium that can signify an overactive parathyroid gland or cancer spreading to the bones. It also determines other aspects of your health, for instance, blood levels of potassium, protein, sodium, chloride, and calcium.
- Lipid Panel
The Lipid Panel determines each of numerous types of fat in the blood, which includes “bad” LDL cholesterol, “good” HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol as well as triglycerides. All these things help your doctor determine your chance for heart disease.
Hope for a total cholesterol of <20 mg/dL, HDL of >60 mg/dL, LDL of <130 mg/dL and the triglycerides of <150 mg/dL.
How Do You Accomplish the Most Accurate Blood Test?
Well, lab testing for health takes a sample of your blood from one spot in the circulatory system and signifies how the rest of your body is operating. With a small sample, there are several ways to hinder the accuracy of the results. For lab testing best practices, keep the following tips in mind to attain the most accurate result.
- Stick to your usual schedule the day before testing.
- Don’t go for a test on a day you feel sick unless the lab test is to figure out why you have that particular illness.
- Don’t go for a test after a quite big change in your diet, for instance, after a party.
- Make sure that you are following your fasting recommendations.
- Drink at least eight glasses of water before going for the test.
- Avoid consuming alcohol before your testing date.
- Don’t do an exercise before your test.
Lastly, it is fair to say that getting a comprehensive assessment of your blood work will certainly today help you to stay on top of your health.
